As the sun begins to set earlier and mornings start to get cooler, some may be desperate to hold onto the last days of summer. However, shorter days and colder temperatures can bring all new joys to our lives in the PA Wilds! It is hard to beat the feeling of curling up in a hoodie with a cup of hot coffee and a good book. The beauty of the changing leaves and deliciousness of fall flavors only last a couple months.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of travelers make their way to the Pennsylvania Wilds, eager to get a view of some of the most gorgeous fall foliage in the world. These “leaf peepers,” as they’re called, know there’s something special about Pennsylvania’s autumn leaves… scientifically, Pennsylvania is a prime viewing spot.

If you’re just beginning to get into the world of hiking, we have some tips to keep you safe and happy… and some PA Wilds-made products that will help you celebrate and remember those great outdoor experiences! Remember, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” and the most important tip for starting hiking is, well, to start hiking!

Open skies, rolling mountains, and forest abound in the Allegheny National Forest (ANF), Pennsylvania's only National Forest. 

This National Forest, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023, was established in 1923 and covers 517,000 acres. That’s public land… set aside for folks from all walks of life to be able to enjoy, explore, relax, and appreciate.

Sally Azzato has been growing specialty cut flowers in her home gardens for years, getting so much joy from hearing how much her flowers reminded customers of wonderful memories from their past. For her customers who don't live close enough to pick up a bouquet, she has developed various resources to teach them how to grow and harvest from a small cutting garden, with creative ways to use the blooms once cut.
